Analyzing The Mobile Phone Industry
Summary of the article
Through this article, I will explain the mobile phone industry before and after the introduction of smartphones by Apple Ince. Lately, smartphones have become one of the most important parts of our daily lives. Most of the people who are aware of modern technology have become very much dependent on smartphones. To know more about the industry I have conducted simple non-methodological research to find out how was the mobile phone industry before the introduction of smartphones into the market and how did it bring revolutionary changes in the mobile phone industry after the introduction of smartphones. We will discuss the industry by focusing on these aspects.
Evolution within the mobile phone industry
The invention of the mobile phone was one of the greatest inventions of our time as it has made communication so easy that it has become an integral part of our lives today. Though the invention of the mobile phone made our communication so easy, it was not taken to the next level at the earlier stages of its introduction other than focusing a little bit on making it portable in terms of size. People wanted to use mobile in a greater sense than just to use it for the purpose of communication. The invention of the smartphone has converted the aspirations of people into reality.
Now, mobile phones are no more for the purpose of communication rather for doing end number of things using the same single device started from social networking to put the bedroom lamp on/off. Smartphones have made it really easier to send emails, social networking, be aligned with the GPS systems, access the internet, buy and sell online, etc.

Were these above-mentioned activities possible through a single device before the invention of the smartphone? The answer is no, it was not. For sending emails, social networking we had to use PCs or laptops which are not comfortable to use while on the move or not convenient to carry with us 24/7. To use the GPS system we had to buy a GPS tracker differently. To buy or sell online we had to use PCs or laptops with the help of a modem connection. So we can see, for different kinds of activities, we had to use different kinds of methods or gadgets or accessories to perform those activities. But, with the introduction of the smartphone, the needs for different means have been replaced.
Now, we can access the internet, buy and sell online, communicate with friends verbally and visually, track location, check updates, and pay for purchases by replacing ATM cards and cash money, etc. These applications of a smartphone can tell us how much it has become important for us to have smartphones. Thanks to smartphone producers in this context as they have made smartphones available to everyone within their reach.

How did I write this article?
In order to complete this article, I have used a few methods, one of them is surfing the Internet to find out information regarding the mobile phone industry. I have gone through various websites like Google, Yahoo, and Youtube. Well, technically, using a secondary source to find information is known as Secondary market research. So, I can proudly say that I have conducted a little bit of market research to write this article, though they methodically do not sound like the way professional researchers do.

Now, to find out the relevance of the information with the real market situation I have conducted an interview with an employee who is connected with the mobile phone industry. Well, this method is called primary market research as the information is collected directly from the respondents. To be honest, I didn`t use any formal questionnaire to conduct that interview, it was just like a normal talk that revealed a lot of information. These two methods were very much helpful to know the situation of the mobile phone industry. Let me discuss the findings from the research in the next section of this article.
The findings from the basic research to write this article
From the secondary research, I have come to know that the mobile phone industry is growing ever since it has been introduced to people. It was also confirmed by the personnel whom I have interviewed and who has been working in the industry for the last 20 years. According to him, by the end of 2010, the market was almost saturated in terms of the number of users. It needed a boost to restart the growth back on track once again. The introduction of smartphones was the boost that changed the scenario in the industry. It also changed the perception of the people that mobiles can only be used for calls and messages or for taking a few clicks of low-quality photos.
After doing the secondary research I have also come to know that the smartphone was introduced much earlier than 2007, in fact in the year 1993 by IBM Simon, but, it could not catch the limelight due to its limited applications. It was the time when Google invented android application software, after that, things have changed drastically. Greater applications were developed with the help and support of android application software. This made the industry to experience the revolution. It appeared like magic and spread like fire across the world that is being embraced happily by the people.
The last finding that I got from the research was that those firms which were leading the industry by producing the manual mobile phones had started seeing a decline in their sales revenues soon once the smartphone launched into the market. They faced the heat soon as they could not read the aspirations of the buyers in the market.
Let us analyze the findings in detail
As I have come to know through the secondary research that the industry is growing ever since it has been introduced handsets to the people, I will elaborate my discussion on that purview with the facts that I have found from my research. Well, my discussion will be based on the mobile industry before and after the introduction of smartphones.

In the above chart, we can see the sales figure of Nokia mobile. As Nokia was one of the leading companies to produce and sell manual mobile handsets in the industry, so, taking Nokia`s sale figures as a parameter for the industry, we can understand how much the industry has changed over the years. Since Motorola has introduced mobile phones into the market, it had been growing on an average of 20% to 35%. The reason for the growth in earlier years was very much evident, as this was the first time when people could use a phone outside their home and could carry that with them anywhere they want. There was no wire string attached to the phone that led to easy carry. The size of the mobile phone was relatively smaller than the string attached telephones. It was also the first time when people could send messages instantly. Portability and convenience attracted the users in earlier years very much.
It has grown till 2010 as we can see in the Fig-1 where it shows Nokia`s performance as a leading manual handset provider but, since, 2007 when Apple introduced Smartphone into the market people were no more interested to buy manual handsets. This can further be seen in the Fig-2.

Fig-2 shows, the sales figure of all the Smartphone companies across the globe. From the graph, we can see the sales of smartphones have gone up very steeply since 2010. The reason, I tried to find by asking the source who has 20 years of experience, told me that, people these days are not only interested to make calls rather they want to use the Smartphone for variety of reasons.
The first reason, he pointed out that people are finding it very much convenient to use social networking and access the internet anywhere they want without using PCs or Laptops. The other reasons were that smartphones can help them to make video calls which means not only they can listen but also can see the person they are talking to.
A smartphone is not only helping to make video calls, social networking, or accessing the net but also provides facilities like working offline through applications similar to MS OFFICE, which decreases their burden of working on any documents. More importantly, it can help to shop online through various apps anytime anywhere. These enormous number of facilities lured people to move them from using manual mobile handsets to smartphones.
One more precious piece of information that I came to know from the industry specialist that the mobile industry is growing not because of the innovation of the Smartphone but because of companies that are producing and selling smartphones successfully at a cheaper price with greater efficiency. Producing and selling smartphones at a cheaper price has led many people to afford to buy a Smartphone. As a result, a greater contribution of smartphones in the growth of the mobile phone industry.
Conclusion
Overall, in conclusion, I can say, the introduction of the smartphone has changed the world as they contribute a lot to improve our daily lives by making our lives more convenient day by day. In the process, firms that were producing manual phones had started finding themselves less relevant to the buyers' p s causing them to be out of the market, Whereas, firms that are producing and selling smartphones at cheaper prices are playing a very important role in this developmental process as they avail the smartphones within the buyers` affordability and enable them to get more benefits from smartphones. That`s how we see, the industry that was being saturated once upon a time around 2009, now has started thriving again by improving the lives of the people better than before.
