A Negative Reward

Well! From the title of this article most likely you have understood what area this article is going to focus. Yes! Your guess is right if you have worked hard to enhance your portfolio within an organization you work for but received only meagre or insinuated appreciation or may be ignored by your managers and bosses for nothing. I could feel your state of mind what are you going through at the moment as you are reading this article. To console you, I have to admit that you are not the only one who is facing the disaster but others too and I am not the different too.



 

Ever since I have started working, I have faced a similar situation quite often like the way you are facing now. It`s meaningless to say that every time I faced it, I blamed myself for not being able to be up to the expectations of my superiors as my efforts were not being recognized, though the reality was different as I was the one who did put a lot of hard work to get things done in a most successive manner. It`s obvious when you work hard and better than others but in return, you get discouraged by your superiors who suppose to be better than you to observe your work and provide you with absolute feedback if there is a need of any improvement or to be rewarded for your better performance. Unfortunately, it was not happening to me. Even after all those efforts which were creating results I was not only being ignored but also taken as a threat. Do you believe that? Well! This is the reality.




Now to make you believe let me mention that the better performance I was producing not only gave me an ignored fortune but also gave me a bad fortune in a sense I was thrown out of the job not once but thrice in my short-lived career. That`s why I have mentioned the title of this article as A Negative Reward that you get when you work hard and better than others but get rewarded with a pink slip.

The negative reward will be the case with anyone who is qualified, hardworking and have the sense to create results better than others. It may be the case with those who have less qualified superiors who have threat perception that may allow them to take their qualified subordinates as a sever competitor. They may start living under the fear that you may be going to take over their position if you are allowed to continue longer. In such a case, the superior would always consider you like prey to get his/her things done to throw you out of your position soon.




Is there a way to identify those superior who are planning to deliver you a negative reward?  Well! It won`t be easy to identify them as there would have a very thin line from where your superior may take a turn. I am considering your superior as a bad superior and addressing him/her as cunning superior whereas a good superior as an encouraging superior. Usually, Cunning superiors do act like the way encouraging superiors act with an only difference is that cunning superiors would give you the golden handshake after the job done whereas the encouraging superiors would give you a handshake with full of appreciation for your efforts and may give you a chance to climb up the ladder.

 

Though one may come up with some minute symptoms that may help them to identify the cunning superiors. For example; Cunning superiors may try to pretend that they are happy with your work with a void impression. A void impression here means that the superior would like you to finish the work with efficiency so that they want to give you a void motivation with unreal emotions. A void impression could clearly be seen as there may have a conflict with past behaviour. If there is a conflict with the past behaviour then one must understand that the superior is not taking things in subordinate`s favour. In my case, I have observed that my superior was absolutely awkward to me with zero communication though she was as usual at the beginning when she didn`t have much idea about my potential. She might have thought that I may not last longer or maybe working under her instructions forever, but, sooner she found that I was more than what she was thinking about me. 


Under the circumstance, she found that she might not be able to sustain her position as I have the potential to climb up the ladder soon as I have greater qualification and potential than her. Initially, she didn`t like me at all for nothing though I was very nice to her with genuine regards for her. Gradually, her awkward behaviour made me a little bit unhappy about her which made me feel to communicate with the higher authority. Unfortunately, she tracked me down in my effort and changed her attitude towards me overnight. Now, she was very nice to me and seeing her nice to me I thought of having an ideal environment for me to work hard and then cement my position in the organization. With greater motivation, I did put a lot of hard work to finish the project given to me.

The next day after the project was finished she asked me to come to her office wondering me that I may be going to be given an appreciation instead I was asked to leave the organization with immediate effect for not cooperating with her. Well! I was stunned and speechless. I felt like being cheated in a very disguised manner that I had no clue of such a negative outcome.

Do we have any ways to avoid a negative reward? Well! To avoid a negative reward you have to avoid any conflict with your cunning superior. Some measures to be followed; first of all, you have to identify whether your boss is a cunning one or an encouraging one. Secondly, if your boss is a cunning one then stop showing your sky-high aspiration rather be nice and watchful before you disclose your desire to them. Thirdly, communicate with your boss whenever there is a need for suggestions whether you need it really or not. Fourthly, pamper your boss that he/she knows many things that you aspire to learn from him/her under his/her guidance. 


Fifthly, make him/her believe that you would like to work under her administration forever. Sixth, let him/her feel that you are so lucky to get a boss like him/her. Seventh, please, do start finding a new job that may help you avoid the negative reward sooner as working in such environment won`t give you any leverage as your development will be blocked forever. Eighth, while staying in the organization never say no to anything they want you to do no matter it makes sense or not. Cunning superiors don`t like to listen to No to their orders as they are not the ultimate individuals with a better comprehension of a matter.

 

As an aspiring employee one should understand the situation around him/her at work in order to project himself/herself as per the circumstances. It may not be appropriate to work at your full potential when there is a threat to do that. One should avoid A Negative Reward by understanding or recognizing the superior who is likely to take you as a threat due to your greater potential or efforts.
